1 Year in the Big Blue Chair

This is almost a month late, and looking back, I can see so much has changed.

Anatomy of a first birthday party

Start with a cake. Banana with chocolate? Sure.

Let's see what he thinks...

Dad, what is this? Do I have to give up my cow?

Hmmm. Good mouthfeel, definite taste of bananas, well balanced...

NOMNOMNOMNOM

Urp.
Can someone get that off my leg and feed it to me?
(Note he also demolished the meatloaf and mixed veggies. Easy birthday dinner, there.)

Next up: torment the four year old by telling him he can't open the presents.

Check.

Provide noisemakers for a whole family. Check. Earplugs? Check.

Sharing, check.

Although T did make sure to drool on everything in case there's any question of ownership.

Next up: bike ride. T is more obsessed with the trike than E is with his bike. Which is saying a lot.

Birds and dogs and bunnies?

Check.
Sunshine?

Check.

Finally, a run through the park. Fun?

Check.
Happy birthday, little dude!

11 months

This one turned 11 months old yesterday.

The changes are getting more incremental. He's more mobile, but not *quite* walking. He has more sounds (babbaba) but not quite talking.

He fills out his clothes in a way his brother didn't even at 15 months. He's closing on 19 lbs but is easily the tallest in his room at daycare. That's because he's still eating everything. (This would be his favorite, chicken.)

With the obvious results.

He's getting more confident in what he's doing.

He figured out how to use the coffee tables to get up on our couch, but that's mostly ok because, unlike E, he'll find the edge and then spin around to slide down feet first.

And he still has an awesome personality.

He was sick for a good chunk of the last month (cold turned to ear infection) and it made him a little fussy. I'm very glad to report he's back to his happy self with the addition of some amoxicillin.

(I wish this had sound so you could hear his motoroboat noise. It's his expression of general happiness, but he'll hold a conversation all in buzzes.)

His only question...
Wait, were you going to eat this?

6 months

T turned 6 months old. For his six month birthday, he got himself the flu.

Yup, that's how I felt about it, too.

But he's getting better, and even sick he was one of the mellower little dudes you've ever seen (we did his chair pictures after he'd been fever-free for a day. He still has the cough). We did pull the swing out of the basement, because he just wanted to move, constantly, and frankly, he's getting heavy! (18 lb by the bathroom scale - doctor's visit is next month when E goes in for his 3 year)

T's favorite occupation is EATING ALL THE THINGS!

You have a thing? I'd like to eat it! Please, can I eat that?

Please? Banilla does not, in fact, taste like vanilla, despite my brother's name for him.

Five months

T turned five months old yesterday.

He just keeps getting cuter. And a little more stable.
Sadly, he was a little under the weather this weekend, so he was low on smiles, and heavy on shots like this...

He's doing well, though - he has more abs then E ever did, E regularly congratulates him on his neck strength ("Aw, buddy, you're stable!"), he's pretty solid on flipping from his back to his belly (via his left side, anyway), and he is working on his skydiver maneuver.

He has never been as roly poly as E and only recently noticed his feet (but shows no interest in eating them or performing nasal excavations with them). He passes his toys back and forth to find the best angle for getting them to his gums. He's happiest under anything new that he can check out (the bottom of the futon thrilled him for half an hour yesterday). He's probably behind E in the rolling/sitting category but ahead in the head lifting/abs category, for whatever that's worth.

He has some pretty cute giggles that come out for E most evenings, he'll babble with anyone who smiles at him, and he wants to eat with the big kid - thus far he has gummed on apple and broccoli, but he shocked me by successfully eating the first piece of corn I offered him a week or so ago.

He's still pretty inconsistent on sleep. He's not a huge napper, but does this hilarious thing where he gets really mad that he's awake and yells then suddenly passes out. Some nights he'll sleep all night, most he wakes once, some he wakes twice or more - so much for letting me find my rhythm! But the most amusing thing is that he has found his own self-soothing in the rings hanging in his crib (safe, I swear). If he's having trouble falling asleep, he just grabs one on each side and talks to them until he's down. Very cute (and much less difficult than mr. pat-me-until-I'm-asleep-and-army-crawl-out).

By the home measurements, he's 27" and 16.8 lbs. He's starting to be more long than chub, although I did realize yesterday that he actually has something to hold up his diaper, unlike the other males in this family (anyone know where to get 28x34 men's jeans?)

One last shot, because it reminds me of this.

(Yes, I did get his arm unstuck and he was much happier.)

Washington- First Plane Trip

Waiting for the plane.

First flight. Looked like this the whole time.

Entertaining himself waaaay too late at night in Spokane airport.

Enjoying his first hotel stay at Benny's Colville Inn, in Colville, WA..

Cousins and grandma.

Second and third plane flights on the way home.

Probably the only time E has ever been asleep coming off of the plane.

Our trip to Washington was for a sad reason - we lost Ray's grandmother, an amazing woman who really enjoyed life. I am glad, though, that we got all of Ray's family in one place and they got to see the boys, and the boys got to meet their new cousin a week earlier than planned - since the planned meeting was cancelled due to illness. It was a beautiful send off and a good honor to a life well lived. In a week to be thankful, I am thankful for the time we got.

Four months

T was four months old yesterday.

Yup, buddy, four months!

He's pretty awesome. He's such a mellow kid still, and smiley. He has slept through the night a few nights since early September, although he has yet to get fully into that groove. He likes his peeps and is just a little bit more happy when Dad is home and he has everyone he is supposed to. He is doing well at daycare and he and I are in a production/consumption race, unlike his bottle-strike brother. No real interest in food yet, but he loves to sit with everyone at the dinner table.

Although sit is a loose term.

That outfit? E wore it when he was about 11 months old...we'll get the official info next week, but our back-room measurements put T at 16.4 pounds and 26 inches. Or... way ahead of his brother. He is his own man....

Click for more big blue chair.

Edited to add: apparently T started rolling from his back to belly last week at daycare. He has done it for me when he wasn't completely flat, so I didn't count it. Punk.
Further edited to add (11-30): Still regarding that as a fluke, since I still haven't seen it three weeks later.
Still further edited to add: At his doctor's appointment on 11-26, T weighed in at 15 lb 12.5 oz, and measured 27". Around 50th percentile for weight and off the scale for height. Well, he's 75th percentile for height - for a six month old. Looooong.

Boulder County Fair-July

More from the phone that sees everything and goes everywhere!

We rushed from our newborn photo shoot to the Boulder County Fair because I promised E he could pet rabbits. He did pet the rabbits (and T got to eat in the middle of the rabbit barn - possibly first public bottle), but E was way more into the bigger animals and the rides.

Cam literally peed the entire time E was hanging out with him. Also: Cam is small. E is 40 inches tall, people. In other news, the last time I saw Cam was at a college football game where he tried to eat the astroturf. MY mascot drags his four cross-country athlete handlers. Hence, Boulder County fair has to recruit from that school up north.

No, not bitter about the result of this year's football game, why do you ask?

E is finally brave enough to enjoy the petting zoo, but he liked this attraction better:

Yes, corn. Lots of it. In his shoes. Whee!

E got his first carnival ride, and then we dragged him across the fairgrounds for mini donuts. Because they're Ray's favorite fair food. Can't you tell?

Apparently they were "cold", but I've never seen such a sad reaction to DONUTS. (I got ones with chocolate and crazy toppings on them and was quite happy. Goofballs.)

The first real fun at a petting zoo and first fair ride are both milestones, but E's biggest achievement was the last of the night. It cost $5 and fortunately they would give the money back if the kid chickened out - which E did, twice. But in the end, he got on, and it was all he talked about for a couple of days.

Oh yeah, pony ride! (Yes, the ponies were on a turnstile and yes Ray walked around next to him. Still, major achievement.)

How You Doin'?

I've been told I have no chance with the tough guy image. I'm back to living off of my cuteness.

So, how you doin'?

(For the baby book - T started smiling at the beginning of September, but unlike E, who would smile more if you smiled at him, T will smile back at you, but more often smiles spontaneously, like he's got some sort of private joke going on.)

4 weeks

Tighe is 4 weeks old today.

What, 4 weeks?

Whee, 4 weeks!

In honor of the occasion, we tried to get the standard blue chair pictures.

Do you guys have any idea what's going on here? Heh, monkey? Dino?

Oy, monkey, this is torture!
Torture, I say!

Yeah, so he wasn't into doing it alone...

... but pretty content to share the chair.

Here's an E for reference. (Not surprisingly, he wanted to be involved.)

T is doing well. He's eating like crazy, sleeping decently (mostly), and developing a pretty good set of lungs to express his displeasure. And the 3 mo. polo onesie fits way better than it did two weeks ago.

I think we'll keep him.

(For reference: E at 5.5 weeks in the same chair but with the back pillow on:
)
