After the park, we headed down into downtown Hilo. And I do mean down.
Note the ship, that white blob on the water... it's about 3 miles by line of flight...We'd seen the ice cream place on our walk up, and thought we'd earned it by now. Eamon got his first cone...
He had a little trouble at the end and Ray had to help with upkeep, but he was pretty happy. And we were glad for the (easily cleaned) rash guard shirt!
We found this sign even more amusing - and less sensible - than the Oregon version. Turns out you can offer even less instruction than those that we had previously mocked (which way are we supposed to run?). However, the sign is justified, as Hilo has been wiped out a few times. We did contemplate checking out the tsuanami museum, but it lost out in the "number of minutes Eamon will put up with it versus cost of entry" calculation. We hit some fun shops instead..We did stop by the Veteran's Memorial that is right behind Ray in the last picture. It was pretty and peaceful, even with gym class going on behind it.
In contrast, Ray found this very amusing (click to enlarge).
The walk back to the ship was largely through the Bayfront Park and some marinas - very nice. The black sand wasn't as soft, but the big rocks rolling in the surf made the coolest sound.
(Because my mom will enjoy the geckos as much as I did!)We got back to the boat tired and warm, but pretty content.
